Many people find it alarming when I tell them what it is that i do for a living. What alarms me more is that in many cases they don't know what a water well is and 9/10 times they have one. Now that's a scary concept to me, not knowing anything about where your water supply is coming from. I remember as a child hearing my father David Haynes and grandfather Robert Haynes talking about wells twenty four hours a day seven days a week. Their were always the stories about people having horrible water conditions or the funny you would not believe stories that to this day still make me chuckle. Now to you this may not be interesting but hear me out.
As im sure some of the stories were dramatized i always found it interesting to sit next to my dad and listen to the tales he had to tell.He told me of clients who had no idea where their wells were located and how it took him hours chasing lines with the detectors and excavation equipment. Of the people who built garages or additions over their well heads and then wondered why we could not get their pumps out. As i grew older this became more and more concerning to me that people were this uneducated about a topic that is so important..
Back when my grandfather Robert D. Haynes started Northeast Water Wells people knew that they had to call the well guy to have the well and pump installed and hope they didn't have to see them again for twenty to thirty years. Great concept but again not all that well thought out.Back in the 1960's when he started the town and state had little record of what was being drilled and what wasn't and what the statistics where for what was being installed. With todays technology educated proffessionals can utilize local and state sites to give you an educated assesment of your current water conditions but when he started none of this was availble.
I remember sitting in my high school biology class and listening to the teacher drone on about the water cycle and water supplies and as my ears perked slightly from my normal boredom it shocked me to not hear here once mention Water wells as a water source. She spoke in great detail about evaporation, rivers, lakes and reservoirs but never did the word well come out of her mouth. At the time i found it concerning but didn't say anything. Later that evening at dinner with my father on one of the few nights he was home early enough to eat with the rest of us. I told him about my class discussion and how i couldn't believe my teachers oversite . I told Dad how i couldn't understand that with how many wells our industry drills yearly in the area that it wasn't even mentioned in the biology class. My father told me at the time that i should tell my teacher in a nice way about her oversite. At the time i didn't want to be the smart kid telling the teacher but even then it stuck in my mind and concerned me of the lack of complete education our society as a whole has of the water systems.
So later in my school career in my 1st year of chemistry water was finally again recommended in which they spoke of H20 and all the basic minerals and chemical components that can be of risk to water and yet again never was their a mention of the correlations between the two. Now at the time i thought it was my personal school district that made this particular over-site, but through the years in speaking with my clients i now realize that in many cases this is a gross over site.
As i grew older i graduated and to my families surprise i truly wanted to get involved in the business and wanted to make programs making people more aware of water systems risks and concerns. I started programs for maintenance an testing protocol and my dad and grandfather laughed saying that i was pulling at strings and that a majority of people only think of their water systems when they were actually experiencing a problem with them. I wanted to educate consumers of the risks and benefits of private water supplies and notify them of their responsibilities of educated consumers.
Now this was about 5 years ago that i started my mission with little support to try and activate these initiatives to educate our youth, Consumers, and teachers of the importance of maintaining a proper water supply. I sent out mailers and flyer's and started making web pages geared to consumer knowledge and believe it or not it has taken till just recently for people to start taking notice of this. Reluctantly i decided to approach another industry in help of my quest to inform end consumers an started approaching real estate agents and home inspectors. Now you may ask why this occurred to me as a fruitful venture but 3 years ago i purchased my 1st home. Needless to say it was shocking to me when the home inspector turned the faucet on for 10 minutes and looked at the tank in my basement and told me that my water system passed.
Now I'm a lil spitfire as my grandpa Bob always said so to my husbands disbelief i asked the inspector what exactly it was that indicated that my system passed and to my dismay he said it just did. It just did can you believe that someone who is supposed to be protecting me from huge home repairs and issues and he couldn't tell me how he came to that conclusion. Now i knew my system would pass i had a 30 Gallon per minute well and new system but what concerned me is the inspector not once metered or evaluated the equipment.. so i asked myself how exactly could he possibly know.
Now due to my husbands glaring eyes i left it at that and allowed the inspector to finish and leave. Needless to say i chewed my husbands ear off on that trip home about the inspectors ignorance. I received his final report noting nothing about the water system other than it was private and decided that it would be my initiative to change this. The inspector also included a new home owners check list a run off that appeared to have come out of maybe one of his school books and again to my dismay their was not one mention of a water testing schedule or Maintenance schedule for my water system. Now they had the basics have your chimney swept, check the batteries in your smoke alarm, have your furnace and forced hot air vents cleaned but again nothing about water.
So now in my office i have been deemed the inspection queen the intention of this article is give you all a lil background of where my motivation and concern was born. Its time that we all become more aware of our water source and all of our surroundings. Today their are sites such as http://www.wellowner.org/ to help educate the consumer on a federal level which is helpful in validating the information i have been preaching for years.
